Writing Reviews?
I’m trying to be a writer and wanted to perhaps write a CD review, I tried writing about Switchfoot and it looks seriously pathetic. Thought of asking how does one write a good review that will grab attention to the readers?
I have a few things I try to do, they’re not dogma, but they help me focus:
-stick to the CD/event unless the other information is relevant .
-it’s not a rule, but I don’t make comparisons to other bands, that can be an instant turnoff for readers.
-have an intro paragraph/lines using humor or some other kind of device (rhymes, puns, etc.)
-try to think of the CD as a unit, how do the songs work together .
-if you want to write about a show, try to think of the event as a part of an entire experience, in other words the anticipation, the trip there, the people you were with etc. as well as the music .
-sometimes it’s best not to think to hard, just write what comes out if you’re stuck and go from there.
-spend some time w/ the cd to experience all your moods with it, different things will pop out at you in different moods.
** note – Naming other bands is helpful, but it can also be harmful. for example, if you say something sounds kindof like Linkin Park, most Linkin Park haters would then not give the band a chance. Lately, I try to describe individual songs and how they feel with each paragraph. Then I try to have them link together as an album concept or at least a string of moods/themes. I describe how instrumentation is used and how/where it pops up later, lyrical themes. I DO use genre labels sometimes though, but usually I try to say that it’s in a genre but it is so much more (if it’s good). – Matthew Jay
